How we describe items

Every listing on WW2ALEX uses the same words for the same things. If a word below appears in a title or description, this is what it means.

Original. Made in the period. Nothing has been replaced.

Original, untouched. An original item that has not been cleaned or restored since it was found or acquired.

Restored. An original item with cosmetic work, such as a repaint or a modern hand-painted design. The listing says what was done.

Refurbished. Another word for restored. The helmet shell is original and the liner may be original too; the chinstrap, paintwork, decals and any other parts have been professionally restored or replaced to recreate the helmet’s original appearance. The listing says what was done.

Reproduction (repro). A modern-made copy, sold as a display or reenactment piece and never as an original.

Relic. An original item recovered from the ground or from a structure, sold as found or after stabilising. Corrosion, damage, paint loss and missing parts are described, not hidden.

Find place. Where an item was recovered: the region and, where known, the district or village. A find place tells you where the item was found. It does not tell you who owned or wore it.

Attributed to / most likely. Our assessment, based on the evidence we describe on the listing. It is not proof, and we say so.

Shell size. The size stamped inside a helmet shell, or measured when the stamp cannot be read.

What we do not do. We do not sell reproductions as originals. Every photograph shows the item you will receive.
