About German Helmets

Original German steel helmets of the Second World War: M35, M38, M40 and M42 shells, each listed on its own page with its own photographs.

How we describe a German helmet:

Model. We name the model from the shell itself. The M42, for example, is made with a flared, un-rolled edge.
Size and markings. The shell size is given when it is stamped or can be measured. Maker and lot stamps are quoted as they appear, and a marking we cannot read is described as not legible.
Decals. We state whether a decal is original to the helmet or a modern replacement.
Paint and damage. Original paint, later overpaint, winter camouflage and damage are described as seen and shown in the photographs.
Find place. When a helmet was recovered from the ground, the listing gives the find region.

Refurbished helmets and reproductions are listed separately under Restored Items & Replicas.
Collector’s guide: how to tell M35, M40 and M42 helmets apart, and what stamps such as ET64 mean.
